African runners, including one defending his title, are projected front-runners in Sunday's world acclaimed New York City marathon.

Last year's winner, Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam, will be competing against Emmanuel Mutai and Geoffrey Mutai - two Kenyans who are not related.

In the women’s division, Kenyan Mary Keitany has been projected a front-runner, as fellow Kenyan and last year's winner, Edna Kiplagat sits out the race with a knee injury.

Some 45,000 runners are expected to participate in the 42-kilometer race through the five boroughs of New York.
